Cliff sits on a couch in the living room, wearing a blanket over his shoulders. He looks ragged.

Alma brings him a hot beverage. Cliff accepts it numbly.

Alma
* Here.
* Something warm.

Alma sits down in a chair across from him.

Alma
* I’ve always been a Milo girl myself.
* This old sweet tooth is probably murder on my cholesterol, but what can I say!
* You gotta live while you’re still alive, ay?

  Cliff Mason
...

Alma
* You don’t have to talk, Cliff.
* But it usually helps if you do. So...
* "She"?

  Cliff Mason
My wife, Mesa, and...
...and my son...

Alma
* I'm so sorry.
* Was it recent?

  Cliff Mason
Yes... no.
No. It's been years. I only... just found out.

Alma
* Oh, no...
* That must've been difficult.

  Cliff Mason
All that time I was away, I could feel them out there. Like I could almost see them. Mesa, and-- and my little boy. Playing together. Growing up.
And now I find out-- I-- The whole time, they were both--

Alma
* There was no way you could have known, Cliff.
* You can’t blame yourself for that.

Cliff looks away.

Alma
* ...Your son.
* What was his name?

  Cliff Mason
...
Jasper.
His name was Jasper.

Alma
* Oh, Cliff...

  Cliff Mason
I-- I know. Your Jasper, I know he's not--

Alma
* It's okay, Cliff. I know.

Alma
* When Rex first died, I kept looking for him everywhere.
* It was so unexpected. I’d see him in the uncut lawn, in the stupid swirls of my hot cocoa.
* I felt so-- silly, I did, but that’s just how it goes, right?
* Your heart wants to remember them.

  Cliff Mason
Rex is... still around, though. Isn't he?
As a ghost?

Alma
* He is, and he isn't.
* Jasper could always see him right away. From day one. That's how I...
* How we found out.
* So, yes, he's in our son's life. And I'm glad for that!
* But... I know he's not back for me.

Alma
* I used to try and... I had this habit, early on, I'd sprinkle baby powder on the mirror in our en suite.
* You know, hoping he'd write a message there, in the dust.
* And then I'd wait, and I'd wait, and...

Alma
* I don't know. I can't live like that.
* Having and not having.
* Getting stuck in that in-between, it's worse than being on either side.

  Cliff Mason
I don't... I don't want to be in that place.
I'm trying not to be stuck.

Alma
* Well, you don't move on all at once, either...

  Cliff Mason
Then...

Alma
* Maybe-- we start by...
* Giving yourself some time.
* Feel what needs feeling. Okay?

Cliff looks down into his mug. It's still warm.

  Cliff Mason
I...
I'll try.
